How to Bypass Port Forwarding for Game Servers (3 Methods, 2026)

6 November 2026

Quick answer: You can bypass port forwarding for a game server in three ways: a tunnelling service such as Playit.gg gives your server a public address through a relay; a mesh VPN such as Tailscale or ZeroTier puts you and your friends on one private network; or an app with a built-in tunnel such as HTN Panel makes the server and shares it in one step. All three route players through a middleman or private network, so you never open ports on your home router.

Why do game servers normally need port forwarding?

Your router blocks unexpected incoming connections. A game server on your PC can be reached on your home network, but players on the internet have no route in until you create a port forwarding rule that sends the game's ports to your computer.

That is often harder than it sounds:

  • You have to find the right ports for each game and set up rules in your router's settings.
  • You may not have access to the router, for example in shared housing or university accommodation.
  • Many internet providers use CGNAT (carrier-grade NAT), where your home shares a public IP address with other customers. With CGNAT, port forwarding does not work at all.
  • Port forwarding shares your home IP address with every player who joins.

Each of the methods below avoids this by having your PC make an outbound connection instead, which routers and CGNAT allow.

Method 1: Use a tunnelling service (best for public servers)

A tunnelling service runs a small agent on your PC that connects out to a relay. The relay gives your server a public address and forwards players' traffic to it, so anyone can join without your router being changed or your home IP being shared.

How to set up a tunnel with Playit.gg:

  1. Download and run the Playit agent on the PC running your game server.
  2. Copy the claim link it shows, then sign in or create a free account to link the agent.
  3. In the Playit dashboard, create a tunnel, choose your game or protocol (TCP, UDP or both) and enter your server's local port.
  4. Share the public address and port it gives you with your players.

Other tunnels: Localtonet, LocalXpose and Pinggy also support the UDP traffic most games need. ngrok works for TCP but does not support UDP, which rules it out for most game servers. For Minecraft only, MineKube Connect is another option.

Trade-off: every player's traffic goes through the relay, which can add a little latency, and free plans limit the number or lifetime of tunnels.

Method 2: Use a mesh VPN (best for playing with trusted friends)

A mesh VPN connects your PC and your friends' devices into one private, encrypted network. Your server then behaves as if everyone is on the same home network, and it works behind CGNAT.

How to set up a mesh VPN with Tailscale:

  1. Install Tailscale on the PC running your game server and sign in.
  2. Have each friend install Tailscale, then share your machine with them (or invite them to your network).
  3. Start your game server as normal.
  4. Friends connect using your PC's Tailscale IP address and the game's port.

ZeroTier works the same way using a network ID that friends join, and Radmin VPN is a free Windows option popular for LAN-style games.

Trade-off: every player has to install the VPN app and join your network, so this does not suit public servers that strangers find in a server list.

Method 3: Use built-in relays or an app with a tunnel included (easiest)

Some games have their own relay or invite system, such as Steam's networking or a game's own invite codes. If your game has one, it is often the simplest route. For dedicated servers that do not, an app that makes the server and includes a tunnel does both jobs at once, so there is no separate agent to install or configure.

How to bypass port forwarding with HTN Panel

HTN Panel is a Windows app that makes game servers in one click and includes HTN Tunnel, which works with every game in its library.

  1. Install HTN Panel on your Windows PC.
  2. Make your server: pick a game, such as Minecraft, FiveM, Rust or BeamMP, and create the server in one click.
  3. Turn on HTN Tunnel for that server.
  4. Start the server and copy its unique connect link.
  5. Send the link to your players. They join through the tunnel; your router and home IP are never touched.

HTN Panel costs $8.99 a month or $99.99 lifetime for every game in its library, with a 24-hour refund window.

Trade-off: it covers the games in HTN Panel's library and runs on Windows only. If your game is not listed, use a tunnel from Method 1.

Port forwarding FAQ

Can you host a game server without port forwarding?

Yes. Use a tunnelling service like Playit.gg, a mesh VPN like Tailscale, or an app with a built-in tunnel like HTN Panel. Each routes players through an outbound connection, so no router changes are needed.

How do I make a Minecraft server public without port forwarding?

Run the server, then use a tunnel such as Playit.gg or MineKube Connect, or make the server in HTN Panel and turn on HTN Tunnel to get a connect link to share.

Does bypassing port forwarding work with CGNAT?

Yes. Tunnels, mesh VPNs and HTN Tunnel all use outbound connections, which work behind CGNAT where port forwarding cannot.

Is it safe to host a game server without port forwarding?

It is usually safer than port forwarding, because tunnels and HTN Tunnel do not reveal your home IP address to players. Keep your game server updated and only install mods and plugins you trust.

Does a tunnel add lag?

It can add a little latency, because traffic passes through a relay. Choose a relay near your players, or use a mesh VPN for small private groups.

Do I need to keep my PC on?

Yes. With every method here, the game server still runs on your computer.

Summary

To bypass port forwarding for a game server, use a tunnelling service for public servers, a mesh VPN for private groups, or an app with a built-in tunnel for the simplest setup. All three work behind CGNAT and keep your router untouched.
